From Carleton to the Big Screen: Meet Matthew Beddome
March 14th, 2024
Meet Matthew Beddome, a 2017 graduate of the Bachelor of Information Technology program with a specialization in Interactive Multimedia and Design (BIT IMD). Matthew's journey has taken him through the realms of blockbuster filmmaking, with credits on notable productions such as Dune: Part Two, The Call of The Wild, and Fast X.
When asked about the experience of seeing his name in the credits of these films, Matthew reflected:
“It's honestly surreal. The significance sinks in when I see how excited my friends and family are - That's when I feel like I have something to be proud of."
Matthew's trajectory was shaped by his time at Carleton, where he participated in the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), gaining valuable experience with organizations like the Canada Border Services Agency, Department of National Defence, and Health Canada as a Software Developer.
After graduation, Matthew embarked on his journey in the visual effects (VFX) industry, starting as a Layout Technical Director at MPC Montreal before transitioning to Method Studios in a similar role. Currently, he serves as a Pipeline Technical Director at DNEG Montreal, a leading company in VFX production, contributing to major projects including Oppenheimer, Furiosa, and Avengers: Endgame.
Reflecting on his BIT IMD experience, Matthew emphasized the diverse skill set he acquired, including programming, 3D modeling, animation, rendering, and proficiency with industry-standard software like Maya. He highlighted the invaluable social aspect of the program, particularly the collaborative nature of team projects:
“As a Pipeline TD, understanding an artist's workflow is pivotal. The Design Studio classes provided a foundation for teamwork, pushing us out of our comfort zones, which proved to be the most effective learning experience.”
Matthew Beddome is an IMD graduate to watch out for. As we eagerly anticipate the next blockbuster release, Matthew's name is one we'll be watching for in the credits, celebrating the success of our esteemed alumnus.
